Alexandria Blizzard

Sometimes I find logos that, for whatever reason, I can't review. I don't know what it is about them, but they leave me speechless. I just simply have to post them and say "here's a logo for you...enjoy".

Such is the case with the Alexandria Blizzard of the NAHL. I don't know why, but it defies description.

Concordia College Cobbers

After reading the story about how Concordia College came to be know as the Cobbers, I'm even more confused than before. Apparently it was derived from a term of ridicule used by Moorehead townies in the late 1800's. They referred to the students of the college as Corncobs and even came to the college to disrupt their programs complete with this little doozie of a chant...

"Corncobs! Corncobs!
Hva' ska' Ni Ha?
Lutefisk and lefse
Yah! Yah! Yah!"

Those ruffians! Anyway, eventually the college embraced the name despite that fact that there was very little corn around Moorehead, Minnesota at the time the nickname was first used. Thankfully they chose this unique and interesting name over Vikings and Lutherans and gave us one of the most pissed off pieces of corn in the history of sports.

Although, personally, I think they should give some thought about going with the historical Lutefiskers over Cobbers, but I once named my fantasy baseball team the Ballard Fightin' Lutefisk, so it's hard to say that I'm impartial.

UPDATE - Ok, I want to apologize. Two straight posts with references to my fantasy team names is really, really nerdy and inexcusable.

Southern Minnesota Express

Way back in January I lamented the demise of the Tri-City Diesel and their cool old-style train coming out of the "D" logo. I didn't think that less than half a year later I'd see it reborn for a hockey team and featuring a much more modern train.

Brought to Owatonna, Minnesota by LA Kings Head Coach Andy Murray and NHLer's Rob Blake, Glen Murray and Nelson Emerson, the Southern Minnesota Express will begin play this season in the Junior-A North American Hockey League. However, their logo spent the last few seasons as a football team in Kearney, Nebraska.

Ok, Ok...so they aren't exactly the same. But they are very similar. It's hard to imagine that the designer of the Express logo had never seen the Diesel logo. It's practically a copy updated to suit the needs of the Express.

The train is tapered in the same way and comes out of a tunnel. In the Diesel logo it comes out of the "D". In the Express it comes out of a hockey puck. The lettering does the same kind of wrap around the train in both logos. Even the light haze around the lettering is the same.

I really liked the Diesel logo. It's very animated and the classic design of the train is great. The same goes for the Express logo despite the fact that they made it more modern. I only wish I could just enjoy the logo without having to think about the possible plagiarism involved.
