Omaha Beef

United Indoor Football kicked off it's third season this weekend with five games including victories by the league's expansion franchise, the Colorado Ice in front of an impressive home crowd. Now with eleven teams, and given the turmoil involved in minor league football, you have to consider the UIF as the #1 non-Arena indoor football league considering that they only lost one team from the previous season and welcomed three new relatively well run teams to the league.

One of the most successful franchises in the UIF, the flagship franchise if you will, is the Omaha Beef. The Beef have been in existence for seven years. They were originally members of the defunct Indoor Professional Football League in 2000, moved to the NIFL in 2002, and wisely jumped that league for the UIF in 2005. In each of their seven seasons the Beef has made the playoffs in whatever league they were in.

But their best success has come off the field. Although I haven't seen any specific numbers to back this up as attendance figures are hard to come by and typically unreliable, but I have a feeling that the Beef is one of the most popular teams in indoor football. The biggest reason is because they put on a three ring circus for each and every home game.

And no team does a better job at playing off of their unique name than the Beef, a name that would be really lame if they didn't do such a good job of using it in other ways. The three ring circus includes the cleverly nicknamed Omaha Prime Dancers...

And in the interest of equal opportunity, the all male dance squad and general group of goofballs, the Rump Roasters...

And of course, no team named the Beef would be complete without a big angus bull by the name of Sir Loin...

So despite a name that I would otherwise write off automatically, I have to give some respect to the Omaha Beef. If you are going to go that way, might as well go all the way. Oh yeah and don't forget to call your booster club the Meatheads while you are at it.

Now if they could just do something about that ugly, unidentifiable logo, then we'd be in business.
